Foster a culture of collaboration before a cloud migration to empower your IT team
IT teams are almost never heroes and are usually at a disadvantage: They don’t get credit when things are working, but they are blamed a lot when issues arise. This drives hesitation in IT vendor selection and sourcing. My recommendation to organizations is to start addressing the cultural perspective with existing IT teams and vendors even before a cloud migration RFP is created. We suggest hosting a regular town hall (perhaps quarterly) with vendor executives and operations staff interacting, and developing integrated working committees and groups to target opportunities for improvement and innovation. Now, some large, risk-averse companies might feel uncomfortable with the idea of collaborating with vendors in such an open way. My counter argument is that clearly defining authorities, rights, committees and groups takes care of this fear, and there is no excuse for not doing the right thing. This clarity can be empowering to your IT teams.
